Husband, Father, and Restaurant Connoisseur

CHICO, Calif- Darren Chadderdon, originally from Phoenix, AZ, has worked in the restaurant business since he was a teenager. He is not only a husband and a father of two but also a restaurant connoisseur.

In dreams of becoming a doctor, Chadderdon took his first job at age 15 making sandwiches and salads at a mall in Cupertino, CA. Soon after he realized he wanted to take a different direction with his life.

Chadderdon went on to graduate from a junior college and then to getting a degree from a culinary school. After working in a few big corporations, Chadderdon said he moved to Chico, CA to open his first restaurant.

Him and a partner opened up The Black Crow, a steak and fish restaurant that was located where Mom’s Restaurant stands today. He also partly owned Tin Roof Bakery for a significant amount of time but later left to conquer something else.

Chadderdon’s next step was to open a new restaurant, except this time, he brought his wife, Michelle with him. They both opened The Rawbar Restaurant and Sushi together a little over ten years ago.

While he likes owning his own restaurant he doesn’t think it is something for everyone.

“This is not a business I would recommend to anyone, unless you really like it,” Chadderdon said.

In order to be successful in Chadderdon’s opinion you must conquer three things; product, service, and experience.

“Don’t try and make more money, by selling a lesser product,” Chadderdon said.

He takes great responsibility when hiring new employees and training his staff, and wants to set a good example for them. The way Chadderdon interacts with his employees shows that he is easy going, but his authority is known. When giving tasks, his tone is personable but his employees know he means business.

He explained that the more that employees work around the owners, the more they can ask for help if needed, improve their work ethic, and allow their voice to be heard.

Chadderdon said letting people go, is sometimes hard, especially when there is emotion involved but, “you have to be somewhat black and white as a business person,” Chadderdon said.

He offers many ways for customers to have the best experience possible by making the way he runs the business exciting for everyone who comes in. He takes involvement in the sushi classes the restaurant offers, where he cooks for the guests.

Throughout owning The Rawbar Restaurant and Sushi, Chadderdon has learned that marketing is a big tool in order to have a successful business. He’s gone to the small business development center where he said he’s been trained on marketing techniques.

Chadderdon is continuing to make a name for himself in the Chico community. He’s constantly thinking of ways to better his business, and keep his customers, new and old, coming back.

Darren Chadderdon, a family man, and a hardworking businessman has a life full of experience, which has led him to his many accomplishments. In his 40s, and working in the restaurant business for over 30 years, he still describes it like an exciting journey. Although good times have come with tough times, he’s still standing with a profitable restaurant and many more possibilities to come his way.
